One call away

The email notification makes a sound at exactly 2:30pm.

I am uninterested in whatever it might be because I’m almost sure it’s an email I mistakenly subscribed to but am now too lazy to unsubscribe. I feel nudged to check it anyway so I do. Lo and behold, my 6 months breakthrough stares at me. I have been employed in my dream company.

I scream so loud, one could hear my voice from down the street and after 5 minutes of “Thank you Jesus!” I calm down, pick up my phone and dial a number. 090278…. Then I remember Anne’s subtle warning to leave you — her man, alone. I can’t blame her because I would do the same. As the saying goes “opposite sexes can never truly be platonic besties”

I can’t believe that I have been in love with you in all our Seven years of friendship. You spoilt me Mide; many girls on the bird app say “I found my person” after 3 weeks of relationship but You are and have been my person. So much so that I forgot that you were never really mine.

I wonder what would happen if I had been sincere to you, that evening you asked me if I felt anything for you? Would we have been like one of those cliche IG couples? I guess I would never know.

After much thought, I call my friend, Diva. She is a sweet soul and as she congratulates me and says some words of prayer, I imagine your voice and how you would have said it just as you did when I got my first job.

“Congratulations Selena, you know you are a star. If you need me for anything at all, I’m one call away”

And you always have been, just a call away.
