They Say The Dots Can Only Be Connected Looking Backward

I often wonder who “they” are anyway

They say the dots can only be connected looking backward,
That a maze is easily navigated the second time around,
But right now it feels like I’m stumbling,
Groping around in the dark, searching for clues.

I can see what I’m aiming at in the distance,
It looks so close yet simultaneously so far away,
I know that the only way to get there is forward,
One foot in front of the other to lead the way.

I often wonder who “they” are anyway,
And if they faced the same existential questions I’m grappling with,
Did they struggle just as much as I am now?
Would they even admit it if they did?

Maybe they don’t really remember,
What it’s like to be in the trenches,
Maybe the passage of time has washed away their memory,
Of what it’s like in the beginning.

I find comfort amidst the chaos,
Knowing that I’m never going to give up,
And what sustains me more than anything,
Is knowing that I chose the path I wanted to.

It may take me forever to reach my destination,
But this dream cannot be reached by the road-well traveled,
Even in the dark days, I’ll always have this with me,
The light of knowing that I dared to dream.

No call to action here, just an appreciative author, grateful for this cathartic release.
