Can the US Department of Education Spell?

The United States department of Education misspelled multiple tweets about W.E.B. Du Bois. They posted a picture and quote from this scholar, civil rights activist, and co founder of the NAACP (department, 2017), that was talking about the importance that education holds. They misspelled his name “W.E.B. DeBois” in the attribution. It didn’t take long for people to notice and troll the Department of education in the comments. The Department of Education then went on to issue an apology tweet that said, “Post updated — our deepest apologizes for the earlier typo.”

The company was not good with their crisis management in this situation. Being an education advocate and also a social media specialist they should not have let that typo slip by. Someone should have proof-read the post. Also the fact that it happened a second time, in the apology post, was careless. They also did not respond until hours later. Mere hours in the social media world can be like feeding a wildfire gasoline. Mere hours can generate thousands of views. I think that the crisis was managed very poorly.

In the future they should always proof read their tweets. Have a second pair of eyes look them over and have a media manager always be there to watch. Don’t let the mistake sit there for hours without acknowledgement. This reflected poorly on their cause, especially being an education advocate, in the future I am sure they will learn to take care of these things faster and not have them happen in the first place.
