How to make your yard work uplifting

I try to take my dog on at least one reputable walk per day. I wish I could say that because I’m a “creative” I take a new route each time to keep things fresh and exciting. I don’t. I take the exact same route. Two weeks ago, I ventured out with a little more time than usual for a walk, so I decided to explore a different way. As I turned the corner onto a beautiful little street, I didn’t pay much attention to the signs in the yard halfway down the street. When I got closer, I noticed they weren’t ordinary signs. They were motivational quotes planted right their in that St. Augustine in the front yard of this adorable tudor home.

The most motivational walking path.

The days leading up to this particular walk had been pretty hard for me and I was feeling more overwhelmed and spread thin than my usual entrepreneur self. These signs, while maybe a small gesture by the homeowner, made a huge impact on me. I’m not sure if it was a combination of the right place, the right time, or the right words, but I broke down in tears right there on the street. My dog wasn’t having it, so I had to keep going. But I kept thinking about these words and how much encouragement they provided at the exact moment I needed them.

It reminded me of something I know I’ve heard many times and I’ve reiterated in my training, but don’t always follow. It’s the idea that we can always have one hand reaching up to ask for help and another one reaching down to pull people up when they need help. We can be helping others while asking for help, at the same time.

When I saw those signs, I had no idea who lived in that home. I had no idea why they put them there. I had no idea if it was a one-off, or part of a larger campaign/initiative. And I had no idea if they needed to hear those words as well. I still don’t know who lives there, and that’s ok. I’ve found myself walking that new route frequently, just for the extra boost.

And then last night, as I was walking into a holiday party, I spotted one of those signs again in another yard. It was a simple reminder to “never give up” from someone I don’t even know.

It got me thinking, if these people can encourage others without knowing who their reaching, how can we make the same kind of impact by helping those right in front of us?
