Beware of phishing scams

When in Doubt, I Delete it

I rarely check my other blog site, Don’s Math Blog. I used it when I had a tutoring business. Since I closed my business in March 2020, I have stopped updating it.

However, I recently checked my messages in another Gmail account tied to the blog and found a heading title, “…error.” I sensed it was about someone who may not have agreed with my posted solution. I was about to check it when I realized all the phishing scams mentioned by several writers on Medium.

My first reaction to “error” was to look at all my published math problems and redo them to check for any errors. After twenty minutes of wasted time, I realized my solutions were correct. Before I post any articles online, I double-check and triple-check my work. I even request a check from a friend and a former math professor to check my work.

I was about to do what I always told myself not to do: open an unfamiliar email. Instead, I deleted the email.

There are many ways a scammer can get someone to take action. With mathematics, I’m a perfectionist.

I’ve written six math workbooks on Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) and have a Teachers Pay Teachers storefront. I check my work.

But I know I make mistakes because I’m human.

However, I have learned to be more aware of what to open and what not to open. I owe this awareness to my teaching career. At the end of each year, I have lots of paperwork to sort through. Some of them are important, and some are not important. I now throw away everything at the end of the year.

When in doubt, delete it. I find it’s always easier to ask someone to resend an email or paper than open it and regret it after the fact.

Throwing away everything at the end of the year has helped me be more aware of what I open online. But, sometimes, I get surprised and assume everything I read online is trustworthy.

The recent events of phishing scams from stories from two online writers helped me remember to be aware of everything I receive online.
