A BMT Mixtape for the Riff

I pride myself on fresh mixtape ideas, but I’ll acknowledge there are themes I return to. Exploring sultry summer days is something I’m naturally drawn to.

Dappled sun, melting ice cubes, exposed shoulders, relaxed schedules. Life’s a little easier — or at least there’s a perception that it’s easier.

Romance weaves in. Light and flirty. Passionate and overheated. Sweet and dreamy. Summer embraces it all.

While this might be well-covered territory in BMTland, I assure you that I’ve taken my job seriously. As always: live performances, fresh finds, iconic bands, and unexpected veers.

K.d. lang doesn’t get enough BMT love, does she? I couldn’t be more pleased to let her kick off my latest mixtape.

J’adore the “Kennedy flair” line — surprisingly vivid, and aside from Rufus Wainwright, I’m not sure anyone else would think to rhyme “hair” in this creative way.

“Summerfling” is breezy and light with a gorgeous melody. I haven’t had the urge to skip in decades, but this song makes me wonder if I still can. Note to self: consult chiropractor first before doing something last attempted circa 1979.

A totally accidental find that ended up the unlikely inspiration for this creation. But listen to it! Sunshine Blvd is 21st-century effervescent pop with an unexpected subtle nod to late 70s/early 80s soft rock forgotten stars like Paul Davis and Michael Johnson.

It’s bright and charming with a touch of wistfulness — that pairing has resonated with me forever.

It’s windblown hair sexy. It’s pretty red toes in the sand sexy. Its lingering looks in early morning light sexy.
