Bits of Time Well Spent

I am a lousy saver. For people like me, financial advisors will recommend socking away a few bucks a day to make their bank account swell. Use the money you spend on a cup of coffee, they counsel, and put it aside for that rainy day. Seems like sound advice.

Perhaps we can take this suggestion and apply it to the one commodity more valuable than money — time. After all, you can devote time to making money but you could hardly use your cash to bank time. Imagine morphing the coffee-saving method into taking five minutes for your mental well-being.

For example, I have a 40-minute commute to work and had a reflexive urge to make up time. I’d zoom by vehicles on the four-lane highway and zip across the yellow-dotted line and give it the gas on two-lane roads. To my embarrassment, I tailgated and ran through yellow lights switching to red. I gained, what, 30–45 seconds. What did all this darting and breaking and under-the-breath grumbling do to my state of mind? My heartbeat accelerated, my shoulders bunched up, my concentration scattered. I became irritated and self-absorbed, maybe even hostile. But after a few days of this approach, I started to wonder if effort contributed to an unhealthiness. To save actual or theoretical seconds, I spent energy and my sense of mindfulness.
