It Helps So Much To Be Needed

Purpose goes a long way when it comes to beating your fears.

I am such a big believer in purpose. Even if it’s a little bit of purpose like holding down a job. I believe that it’s much easier to feel good about yourself if you give yourself some sort of task to feel good about.

You need to do the things that make you feel proud.

He crumpled that paper plate inside of our mailbox.

At the time, we lived in an apartment above a little Chinese restaurant in southwestern Illinois, so you had to walk downstairs and around the block just to check the mail.

Finding that note is one of those moments I will never forget. It’s frozen in time.

I was already depressed back then and by all accounts had “let myself go,” but going through such a young divorce did even more of a number to my self esteem.

I returned home to Minnesota feeling like a mere shell of the girl I once was.

I wound up sleeping on my mom’s couch in her one bedroom apartment when I decided to change my life. I started exercising outdoors at 5AM every morning, and then I popped into a mini job fair at a nearby Michael’s Arts & Crafts.

The manager hired me right away and do you know what? That little job saved my mid-twenties. I felt good about myself again and lost 106 pounds in about 8 months.

If you’ve ever seen Fried Green Tomatoes, I suppose it was something like Evelyn’s transformation of slowly learning to trust and care for herself once again.

Sometimes, life is so hard on our souls that it doesn’t even matter if our purpose is very “small.” It only takes the notion that we are somehow necessary to help us to see ourselves in a whole new light.
