So Why Does Trump Really Want the Wall?

I feel like most reasonable Americans don’t think the wall is as important as Trump does. Sure, some of us are more concerned about immigration than others, but I suspect that even those in support of closing our borders to everyone are starting to feel like Old Orange Puss has gone too far.

So, I have to ask, what is it really all about?

For quite awhile, I have had this image of Trump as a dupe. A guy who thinks he is brilliant when he is really a complete idiot and who is constantly tricked by people slightly smarter than he is. Before he became president, he gave away most of his inheritance to shady New Jersey thugs for even shadier real estate and investment deals because these thugs were smart enough to tell him how brilliant he was while they were picking his pocket.

That led me to believe that this border wall was at least in part motivated by some kind of financial deal. Some contracting company promised him glory and fame and some kind of kickback if he would give them the multi-billion dollar contract to build the wall.

Seems plausible enough, but nobody is talking about that.

If it’s not that, then what is it?

Another possibility is that Trump is a deeply fearful and prejudiced bastard. Maybe he is so with the white supremacist mindset that he really believes any non-white people are out to get him and his. He can’t do anything about those that are living here legally (yet), but he can certainly do something about the ones that are coming here from elsewhere.

However, if that were true, wouldn’t he also be focused on other means of entry into the US instead of just the southern border?

I do think Trump is prejudiced, but I think it is an unconscious prejudice that is not really a key motivator for him. He thinks he’s better than everyone else, and in particular he, being a white male, is better than anyone who isn’t both white and male. I do not believe he is afraid of minorities, and I don’t believe that his prejudices are really what is motivating him to continue to double down on the wall.

The most common theory I hear is that Trump has to make the wall happen because he said he would during the campaign, and his pride won’t let him fail to make it happen.

The problem with this explanation is that he has failed to do so many things he promised to, and he seems pretty comfortable…
