Snow Came Again

NATURE/OUTDOORS

February is so cold

New Year saw warm temperatures of 13 degrees C. It was the mildest new year on record. Two weeks later we had sub-zero weather and one day of snow, although it was sparse and did not last long.

This month we heard conflicting forecasts but snow arrived once more. The whiteness can hurt your eyes, but here it does not cover everything as the sea breeze carries it. The flip side of this is snow banks. I recall a year when we had to dig snow away from our driveway so that we could start our journey home to Germany for Christmas. Dad had to drive a little slower for the duration of our twenty-four-hour drive as snow was everywhere.

In Germany, we had a wooden sled our Opa had made for us. We would trudge the low incline and enjoy the ride down, only to repeat the trudge. The length of the ride made it all worthwhile.

The sled was for two and we shared it with my cousins. I think we shared well. I don’t recall any spats about whose turn it was.

As a child, we had three feet of snow every winter. Crisp fresh snow is a delight. In Britain when it snows, all public transport gets problematic. A temperate climate, it has not invested in the equipment to keep trains running or to clear airport runways. Famously, we also have the “wrong type of leaves.” This was stated by the railway companies.

So here in the south of England, we rarely get snow now, especially so close to the sea. Although snow on the local beaches is a strange vision of beauty. We do have chunks of frozen sea sometimes. When that happens, seahorses get washed ashore frozen to death.
