STORY OF A GREAT TEACHER

Teachers are a blessing. They come in all types. Teachers can be a person or just an incident. Anything that changes you as a person is a teacher, whether it be a person or an incident. That makes life the biggest teacher of all. But a great teacher is the one who helps you to grow without losing your individuality. The one who has your back in some of your tough times. Let me tell you a story of a great teacher and a leader who influenced me greatly.

There are two reasons why I started watching cricket in my time. The one is Sachin- He defined my definition of commitment and entertainment. The other is Ganguli- He is my personification of a great leader and the greatest human.

The story happened on the Indian cricket team, Back when Ganguli was the caption. The team was in low spirit. It was the time when news and controversy of match-fixing ravaged through the country. As a result, the Indian team was reshuffled and Ganguli was given the responsibility to lead the team as captain.

They went to South Africa to play a cricket series. During the same time, Yuvaraj Singh has just joined as a young player in the Indian cricket team. The night before the match, Ganguli had a team meeting. In the meeting, he emphasized the importance of winning the series. And he also advised everyone to sleep early, as taking rest is equally important in the next day's performance.

There are many types of personalities on the Indian cricket team. Some are obedient and will stick to rules like Rahul Dravid. And also he knows there are some players like Yuvi who are keen on enjoying life.

Knowing this, he went to Yuvi’s room to make sure he is there. But as expected Yuvi was not there in the room. Ganguli could have reported the incident and destroy his career then and there. But he chooses to do things differently. He collected the details of all the pubs in the area and went alone in the search of him.

Finally, he found him in a pub, chilling and enjoying his food. He went near him and sat with him. He did not scold him for disobedience. In his own words,” Yuvi is a guy who enjoys life. I cannot blame him for that. I cannot ask him to be like someone else. His difference is much needed to the team, as his talent. All I'm asking was to have control in his life where it is needed”.

He let him finish his food and took him back to the hotel. He made sure he is rested properly. The next day he hit a century and won the match of India. Needless to say, he was chosen as the man of the match in that game.

A young boy's life could have been different if Ganguli behaved any differently. He made sure his potential is explored without losing his spirit or individuality. And that is the reason why he mentioned Ganguli as the greatest teacher he ever had. During his birthday Yuvi wrote on his wall — “ I would rather die to have a caption like him”.

A teacher is the one who can help us learn and grow. But a great teacher is the one who can correct us and drive you to excellence”.
