Ethical Dilemma

Suppose you were in a situation with no simple way out, where both outcomes could lead to negative results, what would you do?

For instance, if you were to hear your friends use derogatory terms such as retarded or gay how would you respond? Would you ignore it or try to put an end to it at risk of seeming weird?

While each person may feel one way or the other, I believe that I would attempt to put an end to it. Going through school, I was not hidden from insults such as these and was (and still am) appalled by the use of such terms in an insulting manner. These terms perpetuate a stigma that our society has worked intensely to reduce. While it may not seem like such a bad idea to let your friends call things whatever they choose, if it perpetuates a negative stereotype, then it should not be allowed.

If you allow a stereotype to spread simply because you’re afraid of being labeled as weird, then there is still time to change. Ethical dilemmas are supposed to be difficult. But for me, when confronted with one such as this, then my choice is simple. We as a society have come so far with stereotypes and discrimination that it would be incredibly disappointing to hear terms such as gay or retarded used in a hateful way. There is no place for such insults in our world.

In this scenario, I would, as I have done countless times before, say something as simple as “don’t say things like that.” It’s not hard. Its simple. Nobody has ever looked at me differently for telling somebody not to say something insulting about somebody, whether it me mental health, appearance, or sexuality. No weird looks, no insults aimed at me, just an “okay,” or nod in my direction. The stigma associated with such terms is unnecessary and detrimental to our society, therefore I would intervene and attempt to stop my friends before they perpetuate a negative stereotype.
