I’m quickly approaching my three year anniversary of moving to California.

The traditional three year anniversary gift is leather. I’m trying to think of what I can show for my three years. Here’s a short list…see if you can make any connections to leather (I couldn’t).

— Rouge Level at Sephora

— Stained lips from drinking the Corporate America Kool Aid

— A couple of mental/physical breakdowns that came from drinking the above-referenced Kool Aid

— Vegan purses (read: not leather)

— The ultimate knowledge of where Jermaine Jackson buys yogurt (only because I was buying Cheddar and Sour Cream Ruffles at the same time)

— The patience to cross Sepulveda Blvd during rush hour

— Enough furniture to fill a 500 square foot apartment (none of which is leather)

— Leather pants that I had the guts and ass to wear, but ultimately returned to the store because they were uncomfortable as hell and came from H&M so they probably weren’t actually leather in the first place

So…you are probably wondering why I think you care about any of this.

Three years ago I packed up my Chevy Spark and drove it from northwestern Illinois to the San Fernando Valley.

I didn’t come from a one-horse town or anything, but it also wasn’t exactly a booming metropolis. Most places of importance (airports, Target, museums, Iowa) are an hour or more away. Naturally, my hometown’s first Starbuck’s opened after I moved.

My transition to California has been met with a wealth of discoveries, and not just those that include the opportunities that you get living in the most populous county in the United States. I’m learning a lot about my thirty one (and then some) years on this earth. I’m excited to share things and experiences that are relevant to me in this moment. I can be a late adopter, so don’t expect what follows to be on the cutting edge of trends. I’m just enthusiastic to be on this journey.

The traditional four year anniversary gifts are Fruit and Flowers…so it looks like next year I’ll celebrate with a trip to Trader Joe’s.
