Rate Limiters are essentially used to limit or control the number of requests sent or received to a service in a network. This is often used to ensure that the system stays responsive and avoid failures even when there is a large amount of incoming traffic. This is done by monitoring and keeping track of the number of requests sent to a service. This is usually measured in units of time which used to set the limit.
For example: 20 requests per second.
All the traffic which passes the limit can either be dropped completely or added to a queue so that they can addressed at a later time.
Even though most services use a load balancer and auto scaling to manage the load, this component is essential to avoid overloading as unnecessary traffic can cause the system to scale up and even hit a wall where it will eventually fail.
