Deleting Facebook made me a better friend.

I didn’t realize I was a bad friend until I deleted my Facebook.

Honestly.

When I deleted Facebook, I thought I was doing it for myself. Saving time, weaning myself off of my phone, protecting my privacy, etc. By scrolling through my newsfeed and “liking” posts and pictures, I kept myself updated on the lives of my friends.

Now, a month away from the social media platform, I realize that I was a bad friend because of Facebook. Scrolling through the timelines of my friends wasn’t real investment in our friendships. Liking their photos didn’t replace a genuine conversation, yet Facebook made me feel that way.

Since deleting Facebook, I’ve spent more time with the people I love, and rekindled some friendships that I didn’t even notice were fizzling out. I don’t think Facebook is bad in itself, but it was a bad influence on me because it replaced the need for meaningful one-on-one time with people.

Maybe send a text to some of the people you appreciate in your life, but haven’t talked to lately. It feels good, and it’ll make them feel good too.
