5 Productivity Lessons Learned From Keeping A Weekly To Do List For Over Two Years

There are many lessons learned from keeping a weekly to do list for over a year. Some of these lessons are that you should plan your week ahead of time, prioritize your tasks, quantify your tasks, keep track of what you have done, and be ambitious.

The first lesson learned is that you should plan your week ahead of time. This will allow you to be more productive and not waste time with things that don’t need to be done at the moment and only focus on the things you feel need to be completed.

The second lesson is that you should prioritize your tasks. This will allow you to focus on the most important task at hand and get it completed as soon as possible so the rest can be completed later on in the day or week.

The third lesson is to quantify what it means to be complete or to make progress on an item. By quantifying the item it is easier to track progress and allow yourself to do the project over time. For example, if I want to complete a book by the end of the week, my item is not “Complete a book”, but it is to “read 120 pages.” I then can track how many pages I have read and therefore making progress along the way.

The fourth lesson is to keep track of what you have done. This helps to identify areas you struggle with completing and making decisions on if you need to spend more focus time on that area or eliminate the amount you want to get done. Every week when creating a new plan, I look at the previous week and make decisions based on what I was able to complete and what I didn’t. What I wanted to complete and what I didn’t.

When I create my To Do list, I expect that I will complete 80% of the quantifiable items by Sunday night. Giving myself this wiggle room allows me to do two things. One: be nice to myself if I don’t get everything done. Two: aim to complete more than I expected myself.
