Ollie learns his lesson by Anita Mohan

Once a upon a time in an old barn lived an owl and her two owlets. The barn stood near the edge of a forest. Every night, the mother owl used to fly out to the forest in search of worms and insects. Of the two owlets Ollie was the smart one. He loved to explore his surroundings. He always wanted to fly. One night when their mother was out hunting, Ollie went to the edge of the nest. He looked down and said “Oh! Look…Mollie, what a beautiful night! It is the perfect night to learn how to fly.”

Mollie scolded her brother “Have you forgotten what our mother has taught us, she has told us to never leave the nest, you can learn how to fly when she’s around.” But Ollie did not listen to his sister. He was so happy that he started singing.

Hoot! Hoot! Hoot!

We are the barn owls.

We sleep all day.

We fly out at night.

When the time is right…

Suddenly, Ollie fell off the ledge. He landed on the floor of the barn. He flew about saying “Oh! Flying at night is such fun.” Then he flew out of the barn towards the forest. That night a hungry fox was on the prowl. He spotted the small owl flying about. The fox thought “Aha! For tonight, this young owl would make a fine supper. But the fox was not lucky, Ollie feeling tired decided to fly towards a mound. Near the mound, was a freshly dug pit. Ollie did not notice the pit. Alas! he slipped and fell into it.

Unable to fly out, Ollie started calling out to his mother. Hoot! Hoot! His cries attracted the bats flying towards the fruit trees in the forest. The bats chased the fox away. Meanwhile the mother owl on hearing her son’s cries reached the pit. She gently helped Ollie to fly out of the pit. She then scolded him, “How many times have I told you never to leave the nest?” “What a narrow escape you have had.” Ollie replied, “I’m sorry mommy, it will not happen again.” The mother owl thanked the bats “I’m grateful to you all for saving my son from the cunning fox.” Saying this they both flew back to their nest. Mollie was happy to learn that Ollie was safe. It was almost early morning and the mother owl said, “Time to sleep now Ollie and Mollie.”

The End!
