A Humble Genius

Babu Mathew, Ex-Vice President of Bush Boake Allen Inc. talks about T.N. Viswanathan

It has been difficult to think of 50 years having passed since T. N. Viswanathan joined the flavour industry. I can remember quite clearly, in 1985, having met a young Viswanathan (TNV as he was popularly known) as a creative flavourist in the BBA Flavor Laboratories, while we struggled on new flavours for confectionery, beverages and for IMFL liquors in BBA, which was struggling for its rightful place in the Indian market with Quest and others as competition.

Later, TNV’s role, when we had established BBA’s dominance in the Indian market, was well established both within the company and within the country. On more than one occasion, my colleague John Wright had spoken to me of TNV’s creative genius in the labs and commended him in public, too, but TNV was always very modest about his achievements and preferred to give the credit to his senior colleagues.

It is a great occasion to celebrate that TNV has completed 50 years as a flavourist, and in the process, has brought credit to both Indian flavourists and the flavour industry itself. I wish him many more fruitful years in this field.
